Team StopTech Comes Out Fighting in 25th Anniversary World Challenge Season Opener

The 25th Anniversary season of Pirelli World Challenge racing got off to a roaring start this past weekend with the running of the 2014 Cadillac Grand Prix of St. Petersburg brought to you by StopTech. World Challenge has always been one of StopTech Racing's favorite series, so it was nice to see our company, our products and our customers so prominently featured during the Grand Prix weekend.

Not only was the race presented by StopTech, but StopTech is the Official Brake System and the Official Brake Friction of the series this year. Plus, the group of drivers using StopTech that we affectionately refer to as "Team StopTech" had a really strong showing with Andy Lee taking second and Jack Baldwin claiming third in Sunday's GTS race. Both cars run full StopTech Trophy Big Brake Kits that are essentially the same as the kits you can buy for your high performance street cars and race cars.

Nor surprisingly, Jack Baldwin qualified his #73 RESET-MD/Motul/StopTech Porsche Cayman S on the pole after leading both Friday practice sessions. "It was exciting," Baldwin said. "For us, it was a situation where track conditions in traffic fell in place, I got a clean lap on drying conditions and that's what paid off. There were still some slick spots. But this track suits the RESET-MD Cayman really well."

While Round 1 was scheduled to be run on Saturday, inclement weather caused it to be cancelled. Therefore, Sunday's standing start grid was based off the qualifying results.

Andy Lee of Colorado Springs, Col. had qualified third in the No. 20 Best IT/Crown 7 Chevrolet Camaro and while Baldwin lost some ground on the start, Lee was able to move into the lead ahead of second-place qualifier, Lawson Aschenbach. Lee and Aschenbach battled throughout the race with slower traffic eventually helping Aschenbach take the lead with just a few laps to go. A disappointed Lee held onto second with Baldwin third.

Lee, twice a polesitter at St. Petersburg and a frequent lap leader at the track, came up short of the win once again. But it was a fighting effort from the third-year driver who was named GTS class rookie-of-the-year in 2012.

“I don’t know how many laps led I’ve had here without winning,” Lee said. Referring to the backmarker who gave Aschenbach his chance to pass, Lee added, “Every year this place seems to bite me in one way. I thought he’d open the door, but he turned down on me. He didn’t do it on purpose. That’s part of getting around here.”

In third place was polesitter Jack Baldwin, who was slightly behind the Camaros for most of the race but was pleased with his third St. Petersburg podium in the last two years.

“We lost a bit off our starting position, but the race was good from my point of view,” Baldwin said.

You can watch the race broadcast on NBC Sports Network April 6 or on-demand at world-challengetv.com. You can also follow all of the series action at world-challenge.com.

The next round of the 2014 Pirelli World Challenge Championships is the Roar By the Shore presented by Kia in Long Beach, Calif. on April 13, part of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach weekend.

StopTech Supported Team Gets Very Special Help In Long Beach

Although Mark Hiett didn’t turn a single lap in brother-in-law Don Istook’s white-hot Audi TT RS this weekend, race day couldn’t have come soon enough for him.

“He’s had his bag packed since last Saturday, and to be truthful, he’s about to drive me crazy,” Laurie Istook said of Mark, one of two brothers born with Fragile X syndrome. Mark and Tyson Hiett are the inspiration behind The Arc Audi Racing Program, a new partnership between The Arc, based in Washington, D.C., and Istook’s Motorsports, part of Team StopTech.

The program’s goal is to provide a unique opportunity for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) to experience what it’s like to be part of a professional racing crew at select events in the 2012 Pirelli World Challenge series. Mark Hiett made his debut as a crew member Sunday during Round No. 3 of the World Challenge, a support race to the 38th annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach headlined by the IZOD IndyCar Series.

“Mark is 47-years-old and this is the most exciting thing he’s ever done in his life, to be a crew member on a race car,” said Don Istook, who along with wife Laurie has taken the family’s personal connection with the I/DD community to the paddock.

Through a partnership involving Istook’s Motorsports, Volkswagen Group of America and the Pirelli World Challenge, The Arc Audi Racing Program will invite 20 individuals with I/DD, their support staff and staff from select chapters of The Arc to be honorary crew members at seven venues. Ideally, that five-to six-hour experience also will raise awareness of The Arc and I/DD among racing fans and media. Sunday’s race saw participation from The Arc of Los Angeles and Orange Counties at Long Beach, site of America’s most successful and prestigious street race on a 1.968-mile, 11-turn layout.

Mark and brother Tyson, 50, have Fragile X, a genetic syndrome that is the most common inherited cause of intellectual disability and the single-gene cause of autism. Individuals with the condition have developmental delay and behavioral and emotional difficulties. Fragile X is caused by a mutation in the FMR-1 gene, located on the X chromosome.

Don Istook said Mark has the intellectual capacity of a 10-year-old, and an unbridled love of motorsports. “Part of this for me is a feel-good, personally, because if you saw Mark’s expression when I gave him his team shirt – held up his team shirt – it was just beyond words,” said Istook, 60. “And when you see people that don’t have an opportunity – whether it be intellectual opportunity or physical opportunity - realize they can be part of something they’ve always dreamed of, it’s a pretty good feel-good.”

Mark’s at-track tasks included helping to load and unload the Audi TT RS, changing tires, assisting in cleaning the car and even helping on the pit-to-cockpit radio.

“When we bring the group in from The Arc, we want Mark to give them a two-three minute talk of what it means to be on a race team,” said Don Istook, who will be assisted by Laurie as group coordinator.

“I did tell Mark he needs to be thinking about what he’s going to say,” said Laurie Istook, an Educational Diagnostician for the Birdville Independent School District with a 29-year background in special education. “I think I’m going to have to guide him a little bit, but we’re going to tell him what to include, how to look people in the eye, which is a little bit of a problem for him.

“For me, it’s an opportunity to put people like my brother with I/DD out in the spotlight and give them a chance to show what they’re capable of doing. Sometimes we have preconceived ideas that they don’t have anything to offer and that’s just so untrue. You spend time with Mark and Ty and immediately you sense their enthusiasm and love for whoever they’re with and whatever they’re doing. They brighten your day.”

Don Istook, who began working on the program in November, admitted part of his impetus was self-serving. “I was thinking, ‘How do these people (his competitors) get sponsors? They come up with an angle,’ ” Istook said. “And part of it’s selfish but part of it’s true-to-life – just looking at Mark and how he loves racing – we don’t see mentally challenged people at racetracks. You see handicapped and wheelchair-bound people sometimes. It just kind of hit me that there’s bound to be some foundation out there that Mark and Tyson fall under that we could approach, not trying to get them to sponsor us but to come up with an association where we can help.

“I looked up The Arc, went to their website, found Trudy Jacobson’s name and left a message saying: ‘Give me a call if you have an interest in this.’ She called me back right away and said, ‘That’s fantastic. I love the concept. Let’s talk.’ Now we have a contract with them.”

The Arc has a network of over 700 chapters across the country promoting and protecting the human rights of people with I/DD. Jacobson, chief development and marketing officer for The Arc, said that in recent years the organization had backed away from partnership proposals.

“When Don called there was something about it that spoke to us…and really revitalized the organization with a whole new identity. Sort of a coming-out party,” said Jacobson, who plans to attend her first live motorsports event soon to watch The Arc Audi in action. “I think Don was surprised when I called back. What sealed the deal was Don gets it.

“We realized that The Arc is an organization nobody has heard of. If you have a family member or friend or co-worker that has I/DD, you have heard of The Arc. But if you don’t have that immediate connection you don’t know and we felt that aligning ourselves with SCCA (Pro) Racing is an opportunity for us to connect with people. We want everyone to understand the people we serve have the same needs and interests and dreams as you, only the challenge is a little tougher.

“We’ve been in touch with VW Corporation of America and they gave us some seed money to underwrite some of the immediate marketing expenses. We’re looking for more corporations to step forward. Here’s this man who has family and is totally dedicated to racing and needs the racing to support that. We’re hoping that we’ll get more companies to call and find out what can we do.”

Istook said his small team of volunteers, management of The Arc and World Challenge officials will have to “dance a little bit” to see how the program works out. “They’re (The Arc) a national organization and they’re excited about little Podunk me putting this program together for them, which makes me feel really, really good,” Istook said. ”We’ve got a two-year commitment from them, so we can legally use their name, use their logo on our car.

“We’re a sponsored team for World Challenge. ‘Sponsored’ means I paid $11,000 to be a sponsored team. But with that we get X-number of seconds of TV coverage at every race (tape-delayed on NBC Sports Network), we get a full-page ad in the Fan Guide. Instead of touting me, my team or my sponsors, it’s touting The Arc. Also, any prize money we earn, I’m going to donate 10 percent to The Arc.”

Track-wise, Istook believes the 2012 Audi TT RS he purchased for $65,000 will be a competitive platform in the World Challenge’s GTS class for production-based cars.

“The car we’re using is the first one sold in the country in four years,” said Istook, who toured the Audi Quattro factory where the TT RS is built in Neckarsulm, Germany, last fall. “We could not get another car from Audi, and I’m not going to get into why. So, our plan with The Arc is real high-profile. I made the decision to take my brand new TT RS and turn it into a race car because, one, we can win and two, because of the high-profile of that car – a five-cylinder turbo with about 420 HP stock. I build all my own race cars, hand-work and machine a lot of the parts. We’re not building the motor but if I needed to I could build the motor, transmission, the suspension, the roll cage.

”I really am kind of a throwback, because not many drivers today build their cars. Very, very few build their cars let alone work on cars. So I’m an old-school racer, and there’s not many around anymore.”

Istook’s Audi TT RS was competing against the Boss 302 Ford Mustang, Nissan 370Z, Chevrolet Camaro, Porsche Cayman S, Mitsubishi Evo, Kia Optima and Acura TSL, the latter two marques with considerable factory backing. In addition to The Arc, Istook’s sponsor lineup includes REVO Performance Software, Enkei Wheels, Forge Motorsports and STOPTECH High-Performance Brakes Systems.

“I’m probably the lowest-budgeted team out there, but I think the car can win with me driving,” said Istook, whose racing resume since 1977 includes stints and assorted victories in SCCA Amateur and Pro Racing, IMSA GTU, Motorola Cup, GRAND-AM Cup, Rolex GT, National Auto Sport Association, Firestone Firehawk and Porsche Club of America.

“When I talked to SCCA, they said they’d love to have that car (on the grid),” said Istook, whose repair/performance shop led by foreman B.J. Jones caters primarily to Audi, Porsche and VW vehicles.”It all kind of fell together but it’s a huge financial stretch for me to do this. Fortunately, I’ve been able to work some good deals with sponsors and come up with some better pricing that has made it do-able. But we need a sponsor. In fact, I’ve had a little decal made that says “SPONSORS NEEDED” with my phone number (817-332-6547). I’m thinking about putting it on the car.”

GoGoGear Gears up StopTech Hyundai Genesis for 2011

Did you happen to catch the GoGoGear Hyundai Genesis Coupe at SEMA 2010 featuring StopTech brakes? It was quite the head turner after its unveiling in the Genesis booth.  Here is a very short video of the exterior and interior...

The car caught the attention of many magazines and websites such as Road and Track, Car and Driver, Motor Trend, Yahoo, and Forbes. This high performance racing competitor is powered by the standard 3.8 liter V6 engine that has been upgraded to output 330 hp and 280 lb. ft. of torque. to get the extra power.

So what's the plan for 2011? Ali Arsham, owner of GoGoGear racing has big plans. " Now that the SEMA show has ended, it does not mean that it is time to relax," he notes. The Gogogear Hyundai Genesis Coupe featuring StopTech brakes will next go to the San Jose International Auto Show on January 6-9, 2011. After that, the team will start to prepare for the season opener of the Nitto Tires United States Touring Car Championship.

You can bet we'll keep an eye on this car when the 2011 season starts.

JC Meynet Champions and Sets Track Record in 2010

It's been a helluva year for JC Meynet and AQ Motorsports in the 2010 Time Attack Series, especially at the SuperLap Battle at Buttonwillow Raceway Park.  JC (real name Jean-Charles) races on StopTech brakes.  Here is recap of the year from his newsletter...
*  *  *
In the world of car racing, F1 has Monte Carlo, Nascar has Daytona, Indycar has Indianapolis, and Time Attack has Superlap Battle at Buttonwillow Raceway Park. Every November for the past six years Buttonwillow has been the place to be in the world of Time Attack racing. Teams from all over the USA and even overseas are invited to come race this event in order to settle the age old debate of who has the fastest Time Attack car/team/driver in the world. The classes are broken down into Unlimited, Limited (Modified), and Street classes and then further broken down by driveline configuration (front, rear, or all-wheel-drive). The goal of Time Attack is to crank out the fastest lap on an open track without strategic considerations other than simply going as fast as possible over a single timed lap (much like F1 qualifying or Drag Racing with turns thrown in). Superlap Battle Time Attack cars are the fastest production based cars in the world and do so on street legal tires.
With many wins, track records, and several championships to our credit, JC Meynet and team fully recognize the need to be successful at Superlap Battle as a win here makes a huge statement and carries a lot of momentum into the off-season. Although we were undefeated in the Redline 2008 Street Class National Championship, we came up a little short that year at Superlap Battle with our only loss of the season (3rd place) even though we still lapped under the previous record. 2009 saw us in Limited (Modified) class and in spite of a very successful season and again lapping under the existing track record, we again only managed another 3rd place due to the heavy competition. On a side note, we did win last year's Limited RWD class in the AQ/Novak Honda S2000.

This year, we really had our game faces on while contending many hurdles and controversies. We are happy to come away with not only a class win but also a new all time track record for the Limited/Modified class, besting the old Superlap Battle record by about 1.5 seconds, a relative eternity in the world of road racing. Our race this year went off without many hitches thanks to the intensive preparation and hard work from our team and sponsors. We did our usual practice sessions and adjustments to get some recent changes working properly and then managed to nail our opening lap with a Championship/record winning 1:48.5 lap time around Buttonwillow's 2.5 mile track (the usual 13CW configuration). For reference, our lap time puts us in 4th overall for this event against all the Unlimited class cars (on slicks) and would have been 2nd overall behind the legendary HKS Cyber Evo car just two years ago. We would have been the flat out overall winners just 4 years ago (and this is with our car being completely Ltd/Mod class legal on full treaded tires, not slicks!). The art of Time Attack has really come a long way in recent years and we are proud to be one of the cutting edge teams. Our stiff competition this year included several high dollar teams, former Time Attack champions/record holders, Grand Am Champions/competitors, and some grassroots teams like ourselves who are doing a lot with very limited budgets. It's exciting to note that the Unlimited, Limited, and Street classes all had their records smashed this year as well as some of the subclasses. It's exciting to be part of this ambitious group of successful racers.
As a bonus to the Superlap Battle competition, JC was invited to drive EDO Performance's black 2010 Subaru STI in the Subaru v Mitsubishi Modified Magazine Shootout. Although the car was set up similar to an Enthisiast class car, JC was able to click off some decent lap times (2:02, good for 2nd place in class at the last Enthusiast class Time Attack race held at this track) that helped the Subarus collectively win the overall over the Mitsubishis. Always fun to do these special feature events. A special thanks to EDO/Tomioka Racing/M7Japan for covering our entry fee for Superlap Battle this year.
Our decisive and undisputed win and record at Superlap Battle this year represents more than just a single fast lap, that was the easy part. The hard parts this year had more to do with our own relentless pursuit to be faster yet more reliable while also contending with yet another new organization incorporating an ever changing and self serving agenda (what doesn't kill us just makes us stronger!). Fortunately, we still have many excellent places to compete in Time Attack competition such as Superlap Battle, Speedventures, UMS, GTA, GTGP, NASA, and others as well as some select magazine events.

We will definitely enjoy the fruits of our labor with this Superlap Battle win/record. However, the off season is only about 4 months long and next year will come faster than ever. Time Attack is about setting records and then working hard to beat them, even if it's our own record we are often targeting. At nearly 700whp (about 800HP at the engine) we are close to our horsepower target but at almost 3000lbs, we definitely need to lose some weight. Another important area that will be improved on is our already decent aerodynamics that can always be better. As one of the premier benchmark teams in Time Attack competition, we plan on continuing our winning ways, developing an even more competitive race program, and doing so while maintaining the highest levels of integrity in all areas.

2010 record: 2 Championships (Superlap Battle and SpeedVentures), 7 wins, 7 records, 1 DNF.
Career record since 2007: 37 class wins, 33 track records, 4 championships, over 90% win record for 4 years (best in TA), Fastest Subaru in 41 of 44 races (100% fastest in class), always raced legally....

Day 2 at SEMA: Cool Brakes and Hot Cars plus Touring BBKs debut

Day 2 of SEMA 2010 brought the big news about a whole new line of Big Brake Kits from StopTech.  The company’s new Touring Big Brake Kits deliver StopTech performance and innovation at an entry level price.  You can read the full press release on the Centric Parts site.
These kits combine StopTech’s legendary, patented, colored ST-40 four piston with a one piece performance rotor enhanced with Power Alloy for improved stopping power and superior resistance to cracking in performance driving situations.  A set of StopTech street performance brake pads and other extras round out the package.  These kits are a perfect upgrade on a budget.
The Identify This Car SEMA Challenge continues with StopTech’s  Facebook fans racing to identify the make and model of varios cars from a close up photo of one vehicle detail.  Eliot E bolted ahead of the pack during the day, so we have added a present that will go to the runner up.  Jump in and have fun at www.facebook.com/stoptech.
Day 2 also saw many of the StopTech equipped vehicle on the exhibit floor grab some media attention.
The star of the show appears to be the new Honda CR-Z.  Motor Trend, Inside Line, Auto Guide and more stopped by the Honda booth to profile the CR-Zs there.  It so happens that StopTech’s Big Brake Kit for the CR-Z was just named Best Performance Product of 2010, so as expected a few cars at the Honda booth are sporting StopTech logos on the brakes.  Other have Honda’s HPD brakes on them.  We wonder who designed and engineered those?  ;-)

Tuner Motorsport Celebrates Fantastic 2010 Race Season on StopTech Brakes

As the 2010 racing season draws to a close, we find ourselves with a long line of StopTech-equipped race teams to congratulate. Earlier in the week we threw a shout out to Compass360 Racing but today we focus on Turner Motorsport.

Turner Motorsport has once again had a record-setting year. This month the team competed in the final race of 2010 at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah. Turner Motorsport drivers Joey Hand and Michael Marsal drove the #97 Turner BMW M3 to yet another podium finish.

The new V8 powered Turner Motorsport M3 running on StopTech brakes has proven itself in Grand Am Racing with two First place wins, one Second place, and four Third place finishes, making for a stellar 2010 season. The team's 7 podium finishes, including a 5-race podium streak spanning Homestead to Watkins Glen, also handed BMW the 2010 manufacturers championship.

The impressive season results earned the TMS team in Second Place in Team championship out of over 30 teams and drivers Joey Hand and Michael Marsal finished Second in the GS Driver's Championship, piloting the #97 Turner BMW M3.

The 2011 Grand Am Racing season starts January 27-28, with the GRAND-AM 200 at Daytona International Speedway, in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Compass360 Takes the Grand-Am Season Championships with Honda Civic Si on StopTech and Power Slot brakes

Congrats are in order once again for Compass360 Racing. After a great run all season long as part of Team StopTech, Compass360 Racing secured their second straight Grand-Am Championship in one of the most dramatic season finales in Grand-Am series' history.

Lawson Aschenbach and David Thilenius, co-drivers of the Compass360 Racing #74 Honda Civic Si, started the race at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah 19 points behind in the championship, but ended up standing atop the standings two-and-a-half hours later, capping off an exciting season of racing for Compass360. The Compass360 Racing competition Honda Civic Si racecars made a switch over to rear StopTech Street Performance Brake Pads at the top of this stellar season and also run on Power Slot Power Alloy brake rotors.

As the checkered flag flew, with #74 on the podium in third, the championship battle was a tie: two teams had 274 points. With two wins and two second-place finishes each, it came down to third-place finishes. That made the team's just completed third place finish the final boost to the top of the championship.

This is Compass360 Racing's second Driver and Team championship in a row. For the third time in the last four seasons, C360R delivered Honda (or Acura) the Manufacturer's Championship.

James Sofronas: One Driver, Two Weekends, Four Podiums

Congratulations are in order for James Sofronas for pulling out all the stops in Virginia last weekend as part of the 2010 SCCA World Challenge Series. For the second time this season, he landed dual podium visits in the same weekend on StopTech brakes for GMG Racing and Team StopTech.
His first two-fer was just last month at Mid-Ohio when he landed first and second during the two race weekend. This time he pulled in both second and third at the Virginia International Raceway in his No. 14 Global Motorsports Group Porsche 911 GT3 featuring StopTech Trophy brakes.

Sofronas battled hard for his second place finish on Saturday after pulling away with the starting pack. Andy Pilgrim gapped Sofronas early, but by lap 13 that gap began to shrink. By lap 17, the two were running nose-to-tail. A brake-fueled pass in Turn One assured him a second place finish with Pilgrim left behind and earned him the Clean Pass of the Race award.

Sunday's third place visit to the podium was well-earned. A rough start had him ninth place by the second lap. One notable move on his quest for the podium was his pass of  Jason Daskalos in the No. 5 Daskalos Developments Dodge Viper for fifth position in Turn Two on lap 12 which earned him the Move of the Race.

"I started picking off guys and then I’d make a mistake and fall back," admitted Sofronas. "I think I passed seven cars…twice. The car was more than capable but I was just not driving in my limits. I’m pretty lucky to finish third. It’s a testament to this GMG team and the Porsche.”

The last round of the 2010 season takes place on October 1-3 at the Utah Grand Prix.

Team StopTech Goes Canadian with Fastco Motorsports Hyundai Tiburon racecars

Team StopTech has a division north of the border now that Fastco Motorsports is running with StopTech in the Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship.  The series has a pair of classes, and the Super Touring class allows for brake upgrades.

Fastco Motorsports has fielded a trio of 2008 Hyundai Tiburon V6 racers for two drivers in the 2010 season.  That would be father and son racers Glenn and Lee Chaplin. They go toe to toe with a field chock full of BMWs.  The brakes of choice this season for Fastco are StopTech Big Brake Kits featuring 328x28 patented AeroRotors with Aerohats and clamped by patented ST-40 for piston calipers.

The season has made it through Round Five already with the next round later this month.  The feedback from Lee in the drivers seat is that they could pretty much outbrake everybody at 125mph down to 40 mph.

You catch a taste of the series with this snazzy video recap of Round Three featuring Glenn and Lee Chaplin...

Photo Essay: Dino's 2009 SCCA Car at SoCal event

The car the Dino Crescentini drove for GMG Racing to victory at Watkins Glen last year as part of Team StopTech made a head turning appearance at a weekly car enthusiast event in Southern California.

The event was Cars & Coffee, a weekly free gathering of car enthusiasts and the cars they love and drive in Irvine California.

This was the car that Dino, who is also the CEO of Centric Parts, drove for the second half of the 2009 season in the SCCA World Challenge season.

The car he drove the first half of the season was totalled in a warmup lap midseason. This car made its premiere at Watkins Glen and was driven by Dino right to the Winner's Circle with a first place finish.

He has a new car lined up for the upcoming 2010 season. This 2009 winner now serves as an ultimate track day two-seater with the occasional stop at events like these.

Team StopTech in Porsche Print Ad

If you were flipping through AutoWeek this week you might have came across a Porsche advertisement comparing the finish line to a blood line. The ad featured four pictures of different Porsches tearing around the track.

In case you were wondering, yes, that is the GMG Porsche driven by James Sofronas all season as part of Team StopTech. The full page ad was too big to shrink down for this post, but you'll know it when you see it by the big StopTech logo across the vehicle's nose.

How do you get your Porsche into a national advertisement? Try throwing a set of StopTech Trophy brakes on your ride and winning the Long Beach Grand Prix with it.

It worked for James.

Team StopTech Drives to Twenty-Five in 2009

It turned out to be a truly stellar “Podium or Pole Position” year for Team StopTech2009, which consisted of the select production based race cars from the Tri-Point Motorsports, GMG Racing and Turner Motorsport teams competing on StopTech performance brakes in the Grand-Am Koni Sports Car Challenge Series and the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Series.

The stated goal of the season for Team StopTech, as put forth by StopTech CEO Dino Crescentini who also drives for GMG Racing, had been to accumulate at least 20 combined visits to the podium or pole-position earning qualifiers. Crescentini brought in number 20 by himself when he earned his way to the podium at the Road America Grand Prix. By the end of that mid-august weekend, Team StopTech was up to 22.

A pair of podium visits from Turner Motorsport at the Salt Lake City 200 stop of the KONI Grand Am challenge joined up with GMG Racing’s James Sofronas taking the SCCA SPEED GT season finale at Laguna Seca to ratchet the final 2009 tally to 25 for Team StopTech.

“It has been a fun and remarkable season,” noted Crescentini upon returning to Southern California after the final race. “I think most of us are already thinking about 2010.”

Can Team StopTech match this year’s incredible successes next time around? Stay tuned in 2010.

Team StopTech: Euro Edition

We just got word that StopTech’s Trophy Brake System scored its first race victory across the pond, at least that we know of. Euro-tuners Raeder Motorsport is reporting a very successful weekend with their StopTech Trophy-equipped Audi A3. Where? Nurburgring of course. More specifically, on the long VLN Nurburgring track which is the Nordschleife plus the GP circuit.

The first success came on Friday when the A3 set the VLN lap record for a front-wheel drive car. During the training session, Christoph Breuer piloted the A3 through the 24.43 km track with a StopTech STR kit installed in only 8:56.487.

At the next day’s VLN race, the StopTech-equipped A3 took the turns to victory in its class. For those of you looking for a quick German or racing history lesson, VLN stands for Veranstaltergemeinschaft Langstreckenpokal Nurburgring and

...and Dino makes 5: Team StopTech Tally Soars

Team StopTech has surged in the last few days, with five more "podium or pole position" achievements over three races on two tracks.

Four of those came from the SCCA SPEED World Challenge, where the Road America Grand Prix (coincidentally presented by StopTech) served as Round 8 of the 2009 season. Stoptech CEO Dino Crescentini made it to the podium along with Charles Espenlaub of Tri-Point Motorsports, who also served up a top qualifying time along with James Sofronas of GMG Racing. (read release)

A whole country (sort of) away, Turner Motorsport was taking the checkered flag with tag-team drivers Matt Bell and Don Salama. Sure it's two drivers but it only counts as one victory for Team StopTech.

Here's a two minute recap. The yellow (some say "gold") beemer in front for most scenes is our boys charging to victory...

That puts the season total to 22, with a long break before we see the last few races of the season.

Is 25 in range?

Team StopTech Driver Focus: Jason Saini

Jason Saini is unstoppable. He joined the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Touring Car series last year for Tri-Point Motorsports and made his mark by landing the Rookie of the Year designation in 2008. This year looks to be an even stronger one after landing his third victory of the season and his second in a row this weekend at Mid-Ohio. Considering that was Round 7, that makes 3 out of 7 in 2009.

The victory in his StopTech-equipped Mazda6 added to his lead in the Drivers’ Championship and put Mazda in the lead for the Manufacturers’ Championship. It also pushed Team StopTech to 18 in its “Podium or Pole Position” season, fueled by Saini’s three wins and a third place podium visit for Round 4.

Before going pro in 2004, Saini made his mark as an autocross driver with a nearly 70% winning percentage. He scored back-to-back National Championships in B-Stock in 2003, and A-Stock in 2004. He was the Pro Solo Champion in 2003 where he went undefeated, and has numerous wins in Tour, Pro Solo and Divisional Solo events. He hit the pro scene in 2004 as part of the Mazda Miata Cup pro-series, finishing in the top five in his fourth ever race. He went on finished seventh in the 2004 championship, and fifth in the 2005 championship.

With Saini squarely in the lead just over halfway through his second SCCA season, it appears the sky could be the limit. Keep an eye on this dynamic, gutsy, successful driver.

Team StopTech Eyes 20 in "Podium or Pole Position" Season

The 2009 race season for Team StopTech started with a “Podium or Pole Position” pledge. The company already had a pretty strong race heritage, but the prediction was that this was going to be the best season for StopTech equipped cars in the SCCA SPEED and KONI Challenge circuits, unofficially known as Team StopTech.

The season is just beyond the halfway mark and Team StopTech has already amassed 16 podium finishes or pole-position earning qualifying runs. The latest was Jason Saini scoring the checkered flag at the Autobahn Grand Prix this weekend for Tri-Point, but the season highlights keep rolling in.

While a “podium finish” means third place or better, Team StopTech has enjoyed a fair share of first place finishes. The season started with Turner Motorsports KONI Challenge victory at Daytona. GMG Racing answered with James Sofronas winning the SCCA SPEED GT stop at the Long Beach Grand Prix. Tri-Point chimed in with Jason Saini’s SCCA SPEED TC win in New Jersey. Turner answered back with a historic KONI victory at Laguna Seca before StopTech CEO Dino Crescentini took matters into his own hands with a first place SCCA SPEED GT win of his own for GMG Racing at Watkins Glen.

However, the biggest single contributor to the “Podium or Pole Position” success of 2009 has been Matt Bell of Turner Motorsports. Bell has earned pole-position starts for 5 out of 7 KONI races this season in his StopTech equipped BMW M3.

With 16 of these successes already in the books, can Team StopTech make it to 20? This could be the company’s best race season ever!

Closeup: StopTech CEO's Watkins Glen Victory

You may already know that Dino Crescentini, CEO of Centric Parts/StopTech, took first place at round 5 of the SCCA SPEED GT World Challenge series at Watkins Glen from the official press release. It was a, metaphorically speaking, long road for Crescentini to this, his second career SCCA victory.

A crash during the practice rounds back at the Long Beach Grand Prix took his car out of the running for a few rounds. This was the same car that that opened the SCCA season with a top qualifying time back in Sebring. Up until 4 weeks before the race it was a bare chassis. The crew at GMG Racing gets huge props for knocking the ride back into such great shape that it lands in the winner’s circle, pretty much picking up where it left off.

Here is a one minute clip of Dino’s interview with SPEED Channel moments after winning…

Starting second in his Porsche 911 GT3, Crescentini got the jump on first starting Jason Daskalos’ Dodge Viper, but not as good as teammate Sofronas, who moved his Global Motorsports Group Porsche 911 GT3 to the lead from third on the grid.

Sofronas led Crescentini for the opening four laps before Crescentini put his No. 4 car out front on lap five, out-braking his teammate going into the Inner Loop. That move that earned him the AutoWeek Move of the Race and the victory as he gradually pulled away as Curran and Sofronas traded second place, turning the Fastest Lap of the race with a 1:55.347 (106.114 mph).

It was Crescentini’s second-career win, and came a day after his 49th birthday. He last won a World Challenge GT race at Portland International Raceway for his debut season in 2005.

“I have to credit GMG and especially Steve Ruiz,” said Crescentini, referring the StopTech’s and GMG Racing Team head engineer. “The car has been perfect every time he works on it! He was everything to me. He gave me the car and all I had to do was drive it.””

“Now that was a fun race, running with Dino and Curran, two great drivers, this is what World Challenge racing is all about,” beamed co-teammate and GMG owner James Sofronas. “I had a great start and jumped into the lead for the first 4 laps but I could see Dino had a little stronger car.”

The race will be broadcast Tuesday, July 22 at 2 p.m. (EDT). The SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge GT Championship next travels to Autobahn Country Club for Round Seven, July 24-26, 2009.
